Concrete grinding is the foundation of every great floor project. Before any polish, coating, or overlay goes down, the slab has to be properly prepared — that means grinding off old adhesives, levelling high spots, opening the surface pores for better bond strength, and removing laitance. Our Process

Surface Assessment

We check the slab for flatness with a straightedge, test for moisture, and identify coatings or adhesives that need removal. This step determines the diamond tooling and number of passes required.

Coating and Adhesive Removal

Depending on the coating type, we use carbide scrapers, shot blasting, or coarse diamond tooling. Tough urethane or epoxy coatings may require multiple passes with aggressive 16-grit cup wheels.

Flattening Passes

High spots are taken down with hard-bond diamonds. We work in overlapping parallel passes to ensure the floor is consistently flat before moving to finer grits.

Surface Profile Setting

For polished concrete the finish grind targets a CSP-2 or CSP-3. For epoxy coatings CSP-3 to CSP-4 is standard. We match the profile to what your finish system requires.

Final Vacuum Pass

The finished surface is vacuumed and blown clean. You get photos before we leave so there is a documented baseline of the slab condition.

What is the difference between polished concrete and epoxy flooring?
Polished concrete is the slab itself — mechanically refined to a smooth, dense surface. Epoxy is a coating applied on top of the concrete. Polished floors look more natural and never peel. Epoxy coatings are thicker, can add colour flake for grip, and are great for garages and commercial kitchens where chemical resistance is the priority.
Will polished concrete be slippery when wet?
A well-specified polished concrete floor with the right sealer is not significantly more slippery than tile. We recommend adding anti-slip aggregate to the sealer topcoat in wet areas like bathrooms, commercial kitchens, and exterior patios. We will discuss the right slip-resistance rating for your space during the quote.
Can you polish over existing concrete that has tiles or carpet glue on it?
Yes. Grinding removes old adhesives, thin-set mortar, glue-down carpet, and most coatings. Some adhesives require multiple grinding passes with aggressive tooling, but there is almost no substrate we cannot prepare. We assess the condition of the slab before quoting so there are no surprises.
